Platon Grigorievich Kostyuk (August 20, 1924 - May 10, 2010)
Platon G. Kostyuk was a renowned Ukrainian physiologist and neuroscientist widely recognized for the development of intracellular perfusion technique, discovery of low-voltage gated calcium channels, and characterization of ionic conductance in excitable cells. He is considered to be the founder of the school of molecular physiology and biophysics in Ukraine and former Soviet Union. Platon Kostyuk fostered generations of students, many of whom became successful scientists and leaders, and spread his legacy throughout the world.
His pupils would like to commemorate his life and to continue in our small ways his work.
They put together their efforts to create an organization with the goal of promoting life sciences in Ukraine, because they are fundamental for healthcare and medical research.
Kostyuk Foundation activity focuses on stimulating young promising biomedical scientists working in Ukraine. Each year, the Foundation recognizes one or two by presenting the Kostyuk Award.
The Foundation functions as a not-profit charitable foundation based on donations from anyone who wants to support the development of life sciences in Ukraine. Itis independently incorporated in the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US. The Foundation web site is now hosted at http://kostyukfoundation.weebly.com.
The Ukrainian Society for Neuroscience also hosts its web page and provide information support in Ukraine.
The donors of the Foundation elect the Board (5 members), which decides on any action of the organization, and two Treasurers (one in Europe and one in North America).
Biomedical scientists working in Ukraine are yearly invited to apply for consideration as candidates for the Kostyuk Award.
